The trolley problem is a famous thought experiment about a terrible choice. Imagine a runaway trolley rolling down a track. Ahead, five people are stuck and cannot move. You are standing beside a lever. If you pull it, the trolley will switch to another track, where one person is stuck. If you do nothing, five people die. If you act, one person dies.

The question is not really about trains. It is about how we decide what is right when every option causes harm. Some people say you should pull the lever because saving five lives is better than saving one. Others feel that pulling the lever makes you responsible for the death of the one person, while doing nothing feels different, even if the result is worse.

The trolley problem became widely known through the work of philosopher Philippa Foot in 1967, and later through variations discussed by Judith Jarvis Thomson. Philosophers use it to explore moral responsibility, intention, action, and consequences.

Its power comes from how simple it looks. At first, it seems like a math problem: five lives versus one. But when you imagine actually standing there, your emotions, duties, and sense of guilt all enter the picture.

It is like being asked whether you would break one window to stop a fire from destroying five houses: the numbers seem clear, but the moment your hand reaches for the brick, the choice feels much heavier.

The trolley problem asks us to examine the difference between causing harm and allowing harm. In the classic version, a runaway trolley will kill five people unless you pull a lever that diverts it onto a side track, where it will kill one person. Many people judge that pulling the lever is morally acceptable, even required, because it reduces the total loss of life.

But the puzzle becomes more difficult when the situation changes. In a famous variation, you are on a footbridge above the track. A large person stands beside you. If you push that person onto the track, their body will stop the trolley and save five people, but they will die. Many people who would pull the lever refuse to push the person.

This contrast is central to the trolley problem. In both cases, one person dies and five are saved. Yet people often see the lever case as redirecting an existing threat, while the footbridge case feels like using a person as a tool. That distinction matters in many moral traditions.

The problem is often discussed in relation to consequentialism, especially utilitarianism, which evaluates actions by their outcomes. From that view, saving five at the cost of one may seem justified. Deontological approaches, however, emphasize duties, rights, and constraints: some actions may be wrong even if they produce better overall results.

The trolley problem also connects to real-world issues, though imperfectly. It appears in debates about medical triage, military ethics, public policy, and autonomous vehicles. In practice, real decisions include uncertainty, institutions, law, consent, and social trust. Still, the trolley problem remains useful because it isolates a moral tension: whether morality is mainly about producing the best consequences, or whether there are lines we should not cross even for a good result.

Imagine a Lego city on the floor. A little Lego train is rolling down a track, but the battery switch is stuck and it cannot stop. On the main track, five Lego figures are trapped. On a side track, one Lego figure is trapped. You are holding a Lego lever that can move the track. If you leave everything alone, the train hits the five figures. If you move the lever, the train turns and hits the one figure.

At this simple Lego level, the problem looks like building instructions: move one piece and fewer figures are knocked over. That is the outcome-focused answer. Five standing figures seem better than one standing figure.

But now rebuild the scene. Put a Lego bridge over the track. The train is still heading toward five figures. A large Lego figure stands on the bridge. If you push that figure down, it blocks the train and saves the five, but that figure is knocked over. Many people feel this is different. You are no longer switching tracks; you are turning one figure into a barrier.

The bricks help show why philosophers care about the shape of the action. In one model, harm is redirected. In another, a person is used as the tool that makes the rescue work. The final count may be the same, but the construction of the choice is different.

That is the trolley problem in Lego form: by moving only a few bricks, we can change how a moral situation feels. The tracks, figures, lever, and bridge are simple pieces, but they let us build complicated questions about responsibility, intention, and whether saving more people can justify sacrificing one.

The trolley problem is best understood not as a single dilemma but as a family of cases designed to test the structure of moral judgment. Philippa Foot introduced the original discussion while examining abortion and the doctrine of double effect, a principle associated with distinctions between intended harm and merely foreseen harm. Judith Jarvis Thomson later refined and expanded the cases, especially through the well-known footbridge variant.

The philosophical interest lies in the instability of our intuitions. In Switch, many judge it permissible to redirect a threat from five to one. In Footbridge, many judge it impermissible to push one person to stop the threat, even though the aggregate outcome is the same. This creates pressure on simple act-consequentialist reasoning and invites analysis of agency, intention, means, side effects, and the moral status of persons.

One common interpretation is that Switch involves deflecting a pre-existing danger, with the death of the one as a foreseen side effect. Footbridge, by contrast, seems to require the victim’s body as the means of saving the five. The person is not merely in the path of redirected danger; their death or bodily obstruction is instrumental to the rescue. This distinction supports constraints against using persons merely as means, though the exact formulation remains disputed.

Empirical moral psychology has also taken up trolley cases, often finding that personal, forceful harm elicits stronger emotional resistance than impersonal harm. Joshua Greene and others have argued that such patterns reveal dual processes in moral cognition, though the interpretation of that evidence is contested.

For experts, the trolley problem’s value is methodological as much as substantive. It reveals how small changes in causal structure, proximity, intention, and personal force can alter moral judgment, forcing theories to explain not only outcomes but the morally salient description of an act.
